Themed weddings (and afro-themed weddings, as a result) are not so different from the traditional weddings. In fact, if we want to be technical about it, all weddings are themed. If a person chooses to have a normal wedding, then it will be traditionally western.
- But all the same, there are some things we should keep in mind when planning your wedding. Let us go through them.
Get A Wedding Planner or DIY?
- Why should we get a planner, anyway? Considering wedding planners usually charge somewhere between 10%-15% of the wedding budget, and they end up doing all the things you are not interested in doing without any of the negative feelings that can affect one’s input (things like jealousy and malice are not likely to occur in the planner’s mind, are they?), what they charge seems pretty reasonable.
- If you feel you have survived the stress of looking for a good
wedding planner because your wedding venue comes with an on-site coordinator – take care. They aren’t necessarily wedding planners. In fact, most of the time, they are not wedding planners. In fact they can abandon you on your wedding day and have done it before.
The budget:
- This, obviously, is one of the most important aspects of wedding planning – after confirming that you are actually getting married, of course. So, first of all, make sure you have one. Secondly, do not lie to your wedding planner about the budget. You might feel like you have to be up to par with his/her previous clients, but lying only make things worse, because once the truth comes out, all the work done will have to be redone, which can take some time and cause not a small bit of annoyance.
- Ever heard of a champagne taste on a beer budget? It is something that can easily happen, especially with an African themed wedding. When we see all the videos and pictures of other afro-themed weddings thrown by the more affluent, we get a number of good ideas. The problem is when those ideas are more costly than we expect. Stick to the ones within your budget.
Other Things to Keep In Mind:
We get ideas from many places, which is a good thing. But there are some things that we need to watch out for, like:
- Replication: Please avoid doing this. How can this happen? You see a wedding that satisfies your every desire, and you want everything done just so for your wedding. This can be disastrous for a number of reasons, especially if it does not suit your budget. So instead, why not take a few ideas from there – preferably the more affordable ones?
- The guests. Since you are interested in an afro-inspired wedding, it is highly likely you will include a number of African foods. Keep your guests in mind, because we don’t all have the same taste in food.
- As you make your decisions, ask yourselves (you and your
prospective mate, that is): Whose desires am I satisfying? - If you can afford it, hire professionals for all posts, instead of using the cheaper option of a friend or doing it yourself. This mainly applies to the posts of DJ and camera man.
Planning a wedding can be stressful for a number of reasons. But remember this is your day, so at the end, what you and your spouse want is what matters.
